Background

ECLOF Colombia is a small microfinance institution with its head office in the departments of Boyacá. It provides credits and training on financial literacy, good livestock and agricultural practices, animal nutrition, home gardening, and organic fertilizers to impoverished rural agricultural communities.

Agricultural clients of ECLOF Colombia are actively encouraged to switch from chemical agricultural inputs to more affordable organic fertilizers. This improves soil texture, increases  nutrient mineralization, reduces chemical use, and prevents soil erosion. This engagement got even more relevant in the recent context of heightened poverty, food insecurity, and inflation.

Through training and technical assistance programs, ECLOF promotes farmers to employ organic fertilizers composed of readily available resources, such as animal dung, compost, and sewage sludge. This enables farmers to deliver healthier, chemical-free products to consumers while simultaneously helping them save cost.
